Tomas Dessureault (born in 2000) is an artist from Abitibi-Témiscamingue whose primary medium is painting, while also working in photography and film. Tomas completed undergraduate studies in philosophy and sociology at the Université de Montréal, as well as two years of Fine Arts studies at Concordia University.
Tomas Dessureault's practice takes shape through an existential relationship to creation, understood as both a vital necessity and a territory of freedom. Addressing the themes of violence and love, Tomas emphasizes their complementary and conflicting nature, through a sensibility marked by inner crises, perceptual fragmentation, and the pursuit of radical authenticity.
Through large abstract fields, visceral colours, and compositions traversed by a constant tension between control and surrender, he seeks to translate psychological, emotional, and symbolic states connected to the contemporary human condition. These profound tensions take form in an intuitive and embodied painting practice, where pictorial space functions as a space of survival, moving between abstraction and figuration.
Tomas's works pay tribute to the passage of humanity and the traces it leaves behind. Whether tangible or conceptual, they become the space from which a profound spirituality emerges, one connected to the passage of time, to fragility, and to the strength of the simple mark upon the canvas.
Tomas Dessureault (né en 2000) est un artiste originaire de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue avec une prédilection pour la peinture, mais touche aussi à la photographie et au cinéma. Tomas a réalisé un baccalauréat en philosophie et sociologie à l’Université de Montréal ainsi que deux années d’étude aux beaux-arts de l’Université de Concordia.
La pratique de Tomas Dessureault prend forme dans une relation existentielle à la création, envisagée comme nécessité vitale autant que comme territoire de liberté. Traitant des thèmes de la violence et de l’amour, Tomas souligne leur nature complémentaire et conflictuelle, dans une sensibilité marquée par les crises intérieures, la fragmentation perceptive et la recherche d’une authenticité radicale.
À travers de grands champs abstraits, des couleurs viscérales et des compositions traversées par une tension constante entre contrôle et abandon, il cherche à traduire des états psychiques, émotionnels et symboliques liés à la condition humaine contemporaine.
